A month after my medical clearance came through, the Peace Corps contacted me with a potential placement, which I got to be excited about for about 1 minute. They said I’d be leaving in November and I replied that I’d have to talk to my family before I decided because my mom was recently diagnosed with cancer. But we don’t have to make the hard decision of whether or not I should go because the Peace Corps promptly withdrew the offer and told me to try again no sooner than March.
So that’s my big bad news for the month–my mom has cancer and I’m not going anywhere any time soon. Mom has had a whole bunch of tests done and we’re hoping to hear soon when she’ll be having surgery and what else needs to happen. Hopefully the surgery will catch everything and she won’t have to go through radiation or chemo. On the plus side, dad is already home full time taking care of grandpa, so he’ll be able to help mom out while she’s recovering from surgery. Once mom has a clean bill of health then I’ll contact the Peace Corps and try again.
So life at the moment is one big question mark. We’re waiting to hear more about my mom’s health. I’ll be waiting a long time to hear from the Peace Corps again, but at least I know not to expect anything until March or so. In the mean time, I need to find something else to do for the next six months (or longer) besides subbing. With so much uncertainty in my life, the unpredictability of a sub’s schedule (and paycheck) is a little too much for me at the moment. A regular schedule would be comforting.
For now I’m keeping busy with the occasional subbing, helping Eric and Corrie move to a bigger house, and working backstage for Miss Saigon at Paliku. If you have any suggestions for me for the next six months, I’d love to hear them!
